Founder's Story
From Revelation to Movement...
Out of Egypt I Called My Son™ Movement grew out of years of prayer, reflection, and teaching on the African presence within Scripture. Early in her journey, Rev. Phyllis Ida Coachman encountered the African Heritage Study Bible, edited by Rev. Dr. Cain Hope Felder, which opened her eyes to the often-overlooked African context of biblical history. She was also deeply influenced by the recorded lectures of Professor Carl Nicholas, featured in the DVD series God and Africa: The People of the Book, which explored the African foundations of biblical history — themes she continues to study, reinterpret, and expand through her own teaching and ministry.
Her theological studies at New York Theological Seminary further enriched her understanding. Through readings, classroom conversations, and especially dialogues among fellow students outside of class, she and others began raising thoughtful questions about where the events of Scripture took place and how those settings shaped the story of faith. These exchanges helped her recognize patterns and connections she had already been exploring through her own study, reinforcing her desire to bring greater awareness to Scripture’s African context.
Through her ministerial work, she led a number of special presentations on The Black Presence in the Bible — both in person and online — including a 2021 PowerPoint Zoom presentation that she organized and led while serving as Minister of Spiritual Formation and Racial Justice. These experiences strengthened her conviction to help others rediscover that the lands and peoples of Scripture were firmly rooted on the African landmass.
Over time, her continuing research and creative teaching took new form as Out of Egypt I Called My Son™ Movement: a faith-based ministry and educational movement dedicated to restoring truth, inspiring faith, and inviting every generation to rediscover the living story that flows from Africa into every nation today.
Rev. Coachman also serves as Executive Minister of Safe Haven United Church of Christ, where her ministry and other areas of service continue to reflect the values of truth, unity, and restoration that guide this movement — a movement committed to helping people everywhere see Scripture, and themselves, through the light of truth, as the journey from revelation to movement continues today.
