Lessons from Egypt: God’s Plan of Protection and Promise

From Genesis to the Gospels, Egypt plays a central role in God’s story. For the children of Israel, Egypt was a place of refuge, struggle, and deliverance. For Jesus, it was the land where He was sheltered as a child, fulfilling the prophecy: “Out of Egypt I called my son” (Hosea 11:1; Matthew 2:15).

Too often, Egypt is taught only as a symbol of bondage. But the truth is deeper. Egypt — the land of Kemet in Northeast Africa — was also a place of safety. Abraham sojourned there. Jacob’s family was preserved there. And when King Herod sought the child’s life, God led Joseph and Mary to Egypt, where their son was protected until it was safe to return.

Understanding Egypt in its true African context restores dignity to the story. It reminds us that Africa is not on the margins of the Gospel, but at its very heart. God’s plan of salvation was tied to African lands and African people from the very beginning.

Out of Egypt I Called My Son™, founded by Rev. Phyllis Ida Coachman, invites us to see these lessons afresh — not only as history, but as living truth. Egypt is more than a backdrop. It is a witness to God’s power to protect, preserve, and fulfill His promises.
